NYX Lip Lingerie Review

I remember my first experience of “liquid” lipsticks clearly: my mom (a Makeup Muggle) hated/hates reapplying lipstick over the course of the day, so she was always on the search for the perfect long-lasting lipstick that would last from her first application at 7:00am until 5:00pm.  Now, I’m fully aware that no such unicorn in the drugstore makeup world exists, but nevertheless my mother went off on this search – and still hasn’t found what she’s looking for.  (Never getting that song out of my head now)  My mom’s search brought us to today’s equivalent of Maybelline’s Super Stay 24, just the 2003/2004 version.

I clearly remember the white tube with the lipstick on one side with the little sponge applicator and the lip balm on the other side, and Lawwwd knows you needed that lip balm because that lipstick cracked all the way down into your soul it got so dry!

Coming back to 2016, when I first fell in love with makeup.  I mean, I’d worn it before (and copious amounts) but never had I bought brushes and two (!) foundations at once because I may want a matte look on one day and a dewy look the next.  No, that didn’t happen before 2016.  So, when I entered this amazing world of creativity and art, I realised that I’d never really worn lipstick before because they didn’t last and I couldn’t be bothered with re-application (much like Vinesh).  At the same time, I would never dare to buy a liquid lipstick because well, experience said otherwise.

However, the more I watched Laura Lee and Shaaanxo with their gloriously perfect pouts of bright colours, the more I realised that lipstick was never optional and what was I doing with my life???

Enter: Nyx Lip Lingerie liquid lipstick.  *Angel chorus*

You may notice that my go-to lip colour is a nude 90% of the time, so when I saw a full range of nude shades, I knew I had to get in there.  These lipsticks may be drying (as are any liquid lipsticks) but they definitely won’t let your lips be caught naked in public.  I currently own five (since they may be drugstore, but they’re still on the more expensive end of the spectrum).  These are my thoughts on each colour:

1.     Embellishment
You could call this my initiation into the slippery slope of Lip Lingerie addiction.  Just watching the lip swatch videos online, I knew that this was the colour I would buy first – soft lavender with a grey undertone.  Do I wear purple makeup?  Nope.  Did I care?  Also nope.

This colour is absolutely stunning on my shade of pasty white/almost glow in the dark (in my humble opinion), but could just easily work on any skin tone you slap it on.  I also find that this colour does not need a second coat, like some of the paler shades; its pigmentation is amazing.

2.     Beauty Mark
This colour I bought at Menlyn Park while having a minor lipstick emergency.  I had applied my liner and a normal cream lipstick and blotted with translucent powder through a tissue (we can discuss this later), but then Burger King happened and there was no way I was passing up those jalapeno cheese poppers.  Turns out, I’d left my lipstick on my bedside table (I don’t keep cream lipsticks in my bag because this is South Africa, people) and I was desperate.

Menlyn Clicks’ NYX stand is UH-mazing! It has every NYX product you could dream of.  Naturally, Julian dragged me away from the stuff I was not there to buy and I went to find a lipstick shade to conceal my glaringly obvious and slightly overlined lip liner.  I decided that I’d take the darkest brown shade because of how dark my liner was.

I’ll be honest and say that despite my initial love affair with Embellishment, Beauty Mark truly is my favourite shade.  I can’t wear it that often since I feel like it requires a full face of makeup and sometimes that’s just way too much commitment for me, but when I do wear it, I am in love.

My favourite way to wear this really rich colour is to pair it was ultra soft pink/beige/shimmery eyes.  I think it offsets the deep brown beautifully.  I do, however, have to bronze a fair amount or I look extra pale.

3.     Satin Ribbon
Clicks totally ruined my February/March budget when they put all NYX products on their 3-for-2 promotion, so I bought Satin Ribbon, Push Up and Honeymoon all at once.  Needless to say, I almost had to cut out the floor of my car and Flintstone that bitch to work for the rest of the month. (Let’s just say, the lipsticks weren’t my only purchases).

I keep Satin Ribbon in my bag with me because it is the ultimate pink nude for me.  It actually almost matches my skin tone, which I like about it.  A few swipes of the wand and I’m good to go.

The only downside is that this colour, being so light, does require an extra layer and I find that layering it makes it extra drying and it’s more likely to crack on your lips a few hours later.  However, this is easily solved with a little wet wipe and a fresh coat when it does happen.

4.     Push Up
Push Up is a slightly rosier pink nude that I wear when I want just a hint of colour, like a gentle blush.  I find that I don’t reach for it as often as the other colours, even though I think the colour is absolutely beautiful.

This colour is slightly more pigmented than Satin Ribbon, but if I’m wearing it with a full face of makeup, I prefer to apply a second coat just because I’m probably wearing it specifically for that rosy pink colour and I want it to stand out more.

5.     Honeymoon
In the collection of brown shades (Beauty Mark, Teddy and Honeymoon), this colour would be the baby of the family.  It’s a very soft brown with a hint of grey (I think, anyway) that is probably the most versatile colour of my small collection.  This lipstick goes with pretty much any look I’m wearing and is pigmented enough for one coat.

Have you tried NYX Lip Lingerie lipsticks?  If so, I’d love to know.

Be sure to follow me on my Instagram (@justcallmemuffins) where I post by far more frequently.  If you’re wondering why I’m not even addressing my two month absence, well, life happens and maybe I’ll save that discussion for another post (because it is something important and non-makeup related that should be discussed seriously).

Wishing you all the love and light in the universe, until next time ♡♡♡
