This episode of July Favourites (which
I really should be doing on a monthly basis, but any way) is served with a
healthy portion of my own words. Yes,
this month I admit that I was *gasp* wrong about something. I mean, maybe it’s less like I was wrong and
more like the brand stepped up its game since my initial impression of the
product was formed. Meh. Let’s get straight into it.
Skincare
Skin Republic Bubble Purifying +
Charcoal Face Mask sheet, Dischem R46.99
I had to start with this product
because I’ve been seeing it all over Snapchat and Instagram. I mean, at first I thought it was just
another gimmick/fad that would soon die out but then I started seeing people
like Kirsty Viljoen praising it and I knew I had to try it out.
Don't mind my favourite mascara in there... |
The packaging says that the foam is created by the oxygenation of the activated charcoal in the sheet mask and the bubbling effect is supposed to “dive deep into the skin’s pores” to eliminate impurities. I can’t say if that’s exactly what it did, but I can tell you how much I loved my skin’s texture after 20 minutes of wearing this.
My skin was ultra soft and my pores
were noticeably smaller. After applying
my toner and moisturiser, my skin felt like absolute silk beneath my
fingertips. My skin felt slightly dry,
but a dab of moisturiser fixed that right up.
I would highly recommend this mask for any kind of skin condition you
may have.
Makeup
Swiitch Beauty Holy Grail Flash Case www.swiitchbeauty.com, R300
I’ll be honest, I have literally used
this once to recreate a @milk1422 face chart since I bought it for my
birthday. The uses, however, are not
limited to fantastical makeup looks by professional artists. The cream pigments can be mixed to create any
shade of lipstick, foundation, concealer, eyeliner, pretty much any cream
makeup product you want.
How do I know that I like it so much
for it to be on my favourites list, you may ask, after just one completely
arbitrary use of the product? It’s
because it’s easy. It’s easy to use and
the pigment is super intense and just glides on. This product can be used by a novice makeup
artist and by the most professional of artists.
It’s a definite thumbs up from me.
Clinique Beyond Perfecting Foundation
+ Concealer, www.clinique.co.za R540.00
One of my greatest character flaws is
that I always have to be right.
So when I expose myself to the internet and admit that I was wrong, you
must understand that I actually mean it.
This foundation is everything to me right now. It covers and conceals in one easy
application with the biggest dauphin applicator I’ve ever seen and stays put
once it’s been set down with a powder.
My skin looks absolutely flawless and I find myself applying less makeup
everywhere else on my face because I’m just so in love with the look of my
skin.
I should probably address why I hated
this product at first. When it released,
I ran off to get a sample from the beauty counter because I was so
excited. The lady at the counter
informed me that the shade “ivory” was the lightest colour and we colour
matched it to my jaw/neck, so I thought great.
Later that afternoon, I applied the tester in a windowless room with
artificial light and fell in love with the formula. Until I saw it in natural light and realised
that it had oxidised like a mother on my skin and I was now an honorary
oompa-loompa (considering I scrape 5’2).
My heart was shattered. It didn’t
help that Julian also pointed out my orangeness later that day. So I pretty much abandoned the tester until I
tried to hack it with another lighter foundation which kind of worked. I’m just grateful that there were lighter
shades available when I looked again or I would be missing out on the
amazingness that is this foundation.
There.
I said it. I was wrong. Or was I?
Fashion
Evenstar necklace
(gift)
I am totally in love with the Evenstar
necklace that Julian bought me for my birthday.
If it looks familiar to you, it’s because it’s the necklace that Arwen
gives to Aragorn in Lord of the Rings. I
am unashamedly a LOTR nerd. Your
judgment will not even be acknowledged.
Books
Homo Deus by Dr. Yuval Noah Harari,
Exclusive Books, R236.00
I am obsessed with history, to the
point that I am that pest during historical movies correcting the script. One time I went on a Facebook rant about how
a movie had so poorly portrayed Hammunrabi, the man who invented human rights
before human rights was a thing (kind of).
For my birthday last year, my sister
bought me Dr. Harari’s first book, Sapiens, and I practically inhaled every
word. I knew the moment I saw his second
release, Homo Deus, I had to have it. If
you have a similar interest, I highly recommend Dr. Harari’s online course
based on his book Sapiens, which you can find on YouTube. I am so addicted, I’ve downloaded the entire
playlist and listen to it while I’m in traffic.
Treats
Gourmet Fudge, Cresta
Shopping Centre court near Clicks, R20.00 per packet of 5 blocks
It was the Sticky Ginger flavour that
made me stop, but it was the Turkish Delight and Baklava flavours that will
make me go back. There’s not much more I
can say about fudge because, well, it’s fudge and it’s delicious. If you’re in Joburg, get yourselves down to
Cresta. You can thank me later.
Random shoutout of the week: Witaj Polsko! (Please don’t hate me if that’s wrong – I literally pumped it into Google Translate and hoped for the best) My views in Poland are massive and I don’t even know anyone in Poland. That being said, I know that I like Polish people because Goo Goo Dolls’ John Rzeznik is Polish-ish and he is the shizznizz. You guys must obviously be cool as.
Be sure to add me on Facebook (@justcallmemuffinss) and Instagram (@justcallmemuffins) to keep up with me on a daily basis. I’ve found that I’m posting a whole bunch of mini reviews on my instagram.
Until next week, wishing you love and light ♡♡♡
